Presentation Title: Data Lifecycle Management Challenges and Techniques, a user’s experience
Speaker: Mr Luca Canali
Company: CERN
Co-presenter: Jacek Wojcieszuk - CERN
Presentation abstract: A recent trend sees many critical production databases growing quickly in size and reaching thresholds that just a few years ago were reserved to a handful of ‘high-end’ VLDBs. This can cause concern to DBAs and application owners, in particular in the areas of DB performance and manageability. In this talk we will discuss the related use cases that have motivated the work on data lifecycle management at the CERN DB group. Success stories and difficulties encountered will be discussed. The talk will also describe the techniques used, with a focus on Oracle partitioning, compression, backup, and the deployment of archival DBs on low-cost storage.
